Youth sports…parents: go home.

Parents should be banned from watching their kids play organized sports.  Period.

For 20 years I have been a reluctant spectator to some of the most egregious behavior by parents at organized sporting events.  From officials ejecting parents from the playing field, to fights breaking out among parents of opposing teams.  And all within sight and earshot of the kids we are supposed to be an example for.

I’m breaking no new ground here.  We’ve all witnessed these things.  But as the parent of a high school football player, I now get to witness a whole new level of dysfunction.  It’s as if the “Friday Night Lights” phenomena has given the erstwhile “normal” parent license to act like an idiot.  Nothing illegal, or dangerous, just behaving as if the outcome of the game, and the performance of the kids was the most important issue on the planet.  I won’t even get into common courtesy as it pertains to sitting together in a stadium (yes lady, your sister sees your from down below…sit the fuck down during the play).

It’s scary to me to watch adults act like this because they are laying the groundwork for their offspring’s behavior when they are “adults”. I continue to hope that our children see it for what it is…insecurities of their parents manifesting itself in selfish and boorish behavior.  I think a lot of them do and God bless them.

I for one, am willing to forgo the excitement I feel every Friday afternoon, and support a parental ban.  I know it will never happen, but until we can learn to act like “adults”…it should.  And one last thing…to the sociopathic mom who had a meltdown at the end of last night’s game a word of warning.  Worry less about your kid’s performance on the field and more about yours in the stands…he’s a great kid but at this rate your behavior is going to drive this kid into dark places you can’t even imagine.
