The Phone Call…(Fiction)

He was immersed in a thriller on his Kindle when his cell rang…it was her.  They hadn’t spoken in several years but for the past few days they had been engaged in an ever escalating tete-a-tete of erotic longing online.  Why is she calling?  Doesn’t she realize it’s fantasy…it’s just a game.  She’s married for God’s sake.  He pushed “answer” before he had time to panic…

It started right then.  As he quickly arose and made for the corner of the parking lot for some privacy, the smile started.  Not a normal smile mind you, but the biggest, stupidest, silliest smile he has ever had.  And it wouldn’t stop…for the nine some minutes that they spoke, the smile was frozen on his face…it actually started to hurt his cheeks.

“Hey there”…was all he could muster…but it was enough.  The girlish giggle on the other end immediately put him at ease.  In fact, the details of the phone call are not so prescient as the giggles.  They both giggled…uncontrollably at times.  A release of tension they had felt for much longer then either realized.  The right words spoken, they agreed enough was enough…you know, it’s in everyone’s best interest blah, blah, blah.  And the giggles.  And her voice.  So fresh, so feminine, so fetching…flooding his head with images suppressed…the peninsula, the meeting room, her office and the cigarettes they shared on the patio.

This was a new woman though.  One he had never seen before.  One he had never hoped to see.  One who was fighting her feelings for him.  He had never imagined, nor been given cause to hope.  The conversation…the flow was so natural, so intuitive, that the smile would not be suppressed.  At the end, they agreed this was probably it…and indeed, later, it was.  But the breath of fresh air that infused his spirit that day…that phone call would forever remain with him.  And that phone call brought not only a silly smile, but hope…
